Она хочет явиться туда пешком и у всех на глазах.► Лаконичность, эффективность, напряжение, тревога, безостановочное действие, полностью лишенное простоев: Тонкая грань придает этим понятиям виртуозность (чему значительно способствует теснота, царящая в декорациях поезда, где проходит 3/4 действия фильма) и становится своеобразным кратким курсом голливудской режиссуры в том виде, в каком ее практиковали на самом высоком уровне в нуарах и фильмах категории «Б». Удивительное совершенство формы, отличающее этот фильм, знаменует окончание долгого (12 фильмов за 5 лет) периода ученичества, через который прошел Флайшер, уже в те годы бывший исключительно одаренным режиссером. В самом деле, Тонкая гран ь – его последний фильм для «RKO» (где он снял большинство своих 1-х фильмов) и предпоследний черно-белый фильм в обычном формате (до прелестной комедии Счастливое время, The Happy Time, 1952, снятой им для Стэнли Креймера). При всем своем великолепии этот фильм – не просто упражнение в стиле. Это также полноценный авторский фильм хотя бы по причине намеренного отсутствия юмора и нравственной неоднозначности в характере героя: тем самым Флайшер заявляет о своих убеждениях и стремится придать повествованию серьезную интонацию. С другой стороны, Тонкая грань обнаруживает странное сходство с некоторыми гораздо более поздними картинами автора, например – с Новыми центурионами, The New Centurions. В обоих фильмах подчеркивается трагическое, абсурдное, невероятное и почти самоубийственное поведение героев-полицейских.
